how to level the deck on a cub cadet

Leveling the deck on a Cub Cadet lawn mower is crucial for achieving an even and clean cut of your lawn. Here’s how to level the deck properly:

Tools You’ll Need:

  • A wrench or socket set
  • A tape measure or deck leveling gauge
  • A carpenter’s level (at least 4 feet long)
  • Wooden shims or leveling feet
  • Safety goggles
  • Work gloves

Steps:

  1. Park on a Flat Surface:
    • Park your Cub Cadet lawn mower on a flat and level surface, such as a concrete driveway or garage floor. Ensure the engine is off, the parking brake is engaged, and the ignition key is removed to prevent accidental startup.
  2. Check Tire Pressure:
    • Before leveling the deck, check the tire pressure on all four tires of your mower. The tires should be properly inflated to the recommended pressure in your mower’s owner’s manual. Uneven tire pressure can affect the deck’s level.
  3. Lower the Mower Deck:
    • Lower the mower deck to its lowest cutting height setting. You can usually do this by moving the height adjustment lever to the lowest position.
  4. Measure the Blade Heights:
    • Measure the distance from the ground to the tip of each mower blade. You can use a tape measure or a deck leveling gauge. Record these measurements for reference.
  5. Check the Deck Level Side-to-Side:
    • Place a carpenter’s level across the width of the mower deck from side to side. Check the bubble in the level to see if it’s level. If it’s not level, you’ll need to adjust the deck height on one side.
  6. Adjust the Deck Height:
    • Locate the deck adjustment mechanism on the side of the mower deck (usually a turnbuckle or adjustment rod). Use a wrench or socket set to adjust the height of the deck on the lower side. Turn the adjustment rod or turnbuckle clockwise to raise that side or counterclockwise to lower it.
  7. Check the Deck Level Front-to-Back:
    • Place the carpenter’s level along the length of the mower deck from front to back. Check the bubble in the level to see if it’s level. If it’s not level, you’ll need to adjust the deck pitch.
  8. Adjust the Deck Pitch:
    • Locate the deck pitch adjustment mechanism on the front of the mower deck (usually another turnbuckle or adjustment rod). Use a wrench or socket set to adjust the deck pitch. Turn the adjustment rod or turnbuckle clockwise to lower the front or counterclockwise to raise it.
  9. Recheck Blade Heights:
    • After making the necessary adjustments, measure the distance from the ground to the tip of each mower blade again to ensure they are at the same height. Adjust as needed.
  10. Test the Mower:
    • Test the mower by mowing a small section of your lawn. Check the cut to ensure it’s even and level.
  11. Final Adjustments:
    • Fine-tune the deck height as necessary until you achieve an even and level cut across your entire lawn.

By following these steps and periodically checking and adjusting your Cub Cadet mower deck, you’ll ensure that your lawn gets a consistent and clean cut, resulting in a well-maintained and healthy lawn.
